Addiction involves craving for something intensely, the loss of
control over its use, and continuing involvement with it despite
adverse consequences. A
The word, "Addiction" is derived from a Latin term for 'enslaved by'
or 'bound to.' Anyone who has struggled to overcome an addictionor has tried to help someone else to do so-understands why.
Addiction can also be called, substance use disorder (SUD), which is a
complex condition in which there is the uncontrolled use of a
substance despite harmful consequences. People with SUD have an
intense focus on using a certain substance(s) such as alcohol,
tobacco, or illicit drugs, to the point where the person’s ability to
function in day-to-day life becomes impaired. People keep using the
substance even when they know it is causing or will cause problems.
The most severe SUDs are sometimes called addictions only.
Some of the crucial symptoms of SUD
1.Continuing to use the substance despite knowing that a physical or
psychological health issue was likely caused or worsened by the
substance abuse.
2. Using the substance in large amounts or over a long period than
intended.
3. Exhibiting withdrawal symptoms when not using the substance.
4. Stopping or decreasing social, work-related, or recreational
activities due to substance use.
5. Having a strong urge to use the substance
6. Continuing to use the substance even when it causes interpersonal
problems or makes them worse.
7. Continuing to use the substance even in situations that are risky or
physically dangerous.
People can develop an addiction to: -
1. Alcohol
2. Marijuana
3. PCP, LSD, and other hallucinogens
4. Inhalants, such as paint thinners and glue
5. Opioid pain killers, such as codeine and oxycodone, heroin
6. Sedatives, hypnotics, and anxiolytics (medicines for anxiety such as
tranquilizers)
7. Cocaine, methamphetamine, and other stimulants
8. Tobacco
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, people begin
taking drugs for a variety of reasons, including:
1. To feel-good — Feeling of pleasure, “special” or "intoxication"
2. To feel better — Decrease stress, forget problems or feel numb
3. To do better — improve performance or thinking
4. Curiosity and peer pressure or experimenting.
In addition to substances, people can also develop an addiction to
behaviours, such as gambling (gambling disorder).
The initial decision to take drugs is typically voluntary. But with
continued use, one's ability to exert self-control can become
seriously impaired. This impairment in self-control is the hallmark of
addiction.
Symptoms of substance use disorder are grouped into four
categories: -
1. Impaired control: A craving or strong urge to use the substance;
desire or failed attempts to cut down or control substance use
2. Social problems: Substance use causes failure to complete major
tasks at work, school, or home; social, work, or leisure activities are
given up or cut back because of substance use
3. Risky use: Substance is used in risky settings; continued use
despite known problems
4. Drug effects: Tolerance (need for larger amounts to get the same
effect); withdrawal symptoms (different for each substance).
Many people experience substance use disorder along with another
psychiatric disorder. Oftentimes, another psychiatric disorder
precedes substance use disorder, or the use of a substance may
trigger or worsen another psychiatric disorder.
Therefore, Hope Care helps you to find a solution to all of these
problems. Thus, we treat our family on the following methods: -
1. Psychological Method- This may include behavioural or talk
therapy and looks at emotional dysfunction or potentially harmful
motivations as the main cause of SUD.
2. Medical Method- This requires medication to relieve symptoms
and treatment by a physician. It emphasizes the physiological,
biological, or genetic causes of SUD.
3. Sociocultural Method- This aims to alter the physical and social
environment of a person with SUD to address possible deficiencies in
that environment. It may include self-help or spiritual activities.
Oftentimes, people who have personal experience with addiction
and are in recovery themselves facilitate treatment.
